Gladys Grace Mathis

Gladys Grace Mathis, age 72, of rural Pinckneyville, IL passed away suddenly at 4:43 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2001 at St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis, MO

Gladys was born in Pilot Knob Township of Washington County, IL on April 16, 1929, the daughter of Orange and Opal (Hutchings) Campbell.

She was united in marriage to Daniel L. Mathis on October 26, 1946 at the First Baptist Church, Nashville, IL.  He preceded her in death on January 17, 2001.

In addition to raising her family of five children, she devoted her life to her husband, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  During her lifetime she worked at Mallory Electronics and retired while working at Del Monte Food Corp.  She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, crafts, and gardening.

Gladys was a member of Beaucoup Baptist Church of Pinckneyville where she taught Sunday School for many years and also, served on the bereavement and kitchen committee.

Gladys is survived by three daughters; Nora Beth Helvey and her husband Larry of Pinckneyville, IL, Susan Knapp and her husband Ted of Mt. Vernon, IL, Cynthia Cluck and her husband Michael of Herrin, IL, one son, Mark Mathis and his wife Lillian of Pinckneyville, IL ten grandchildren; Mitchell Petty and wife Meredith of Evansville, IN, Bryan Helvey of Belleville, IL, Kristin Helvey, David Helvey and Dustin Cluck of Herrin, IL, Susan Garavaglia and husband Jim of Pinckneyville, IL, Jeanna Deaton and husband Aaron of Herrin, IL, Jared Knapp and Megan Knapp of Mt. Vernon, IL, and Jacie Mathis of Pinckneyville, IL, three great grandchildren, Landon Reed & Emma Grace Deaton, and Madison Kaye Garavaglia.  4 brothers, Merle Campbell and wife Ruth of Pinckneyville, IL, Elmer Lee Campbell and wife Carol Ann of Sandwich, IL, Billie Davis and wife Virginia of Madison WS, and Pat Campbell and wife Joyce of Pinckneyville, IL, 2 sisters, JoAnn Law and husband Larry of Somonauk, IL and Sharon Hinshaw and Ed of Pontiac, IL. 2 sister-in-laws, Marsha Campbell of Dwight, IL and Kay Davis of Du Quoin, IL. and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother, Jessie Campbell, a daughter, Linda Ellen Petty, a granddaughter, Rhonda Kaye Helvey, and a grandson, Dustin Daniel Mathis, 2 brothers, Clifford Campbell and Paul Davis, a sister and two brothers in infancy.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. in the Beaucoup Baptist Church in Pinckneyville, IL with Rev. Bill Fox officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill Cemetery in Pinckneyville, IL.  

Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville, IL on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m and then at the church on Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. till services.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or the Rhonda Kaye Helvey Memorial Scholarship Fund.
